Valid consent online “neither distorts nor constrains individuals’ will to accept or reject optional data processing options choices on top of strictly necessary ones,” ID Side Data Protection and Innovation Advisor Marie-Charlotte Bouquet writes in an op-ed. Bouquet assesses the current state of tools that register users’ consent preferences and concludes “online consent today is neither legally valid nor implementable simply because we use far too many services.”
