Ireland’s DPC fines Meta 91M euros for lax data security

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission issued a 91 million euro fine and formal reprimand to Meta after the company notified the agency in 2019 that it stored certain users’ passwords in plain text in its internal systems. A draft penalty finding Meta in violation of several EU General Data Protection Regulation provisions was circulated among other EU data protection authorities in June, which did not yield any objections to the DPC’s decision.
