EU, Japan open adequacy extension talks

European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath and Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commissioner Ohshima Shuhei issued a joint statement on strengthening their respective jurisdiction’s strategic partnership on data protection and free data flows. Japan revised its data protection laws following a successful European Commission review of the 2019 data adequacy agreement between the EU and Japan conducted in 2023, and both officials said the PPC and European Commission have opened extension talks for the adequacy agreement.
