UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to unveil UK-wide digital ID scheme

BBC News reports U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce Friday a new, compulsory U.K.-wide digital ID framework. Starmer believes the required identification will help mitigate illegal working and modernize the states. The details of the scheme will undergo a consultation, including for how to make it work for those who do not own a smartphone or possess a passport. Last year, the government rejected a digital ID scheme proposed by former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
