European Commission says Meta plays to revise pay-or-consent model

The European Commission accepted changes to Meta’s pay-or-consent advertising model to offer EU users an alternative choice for limited personalized ads on Facebook and Instagram, the Financial Times reports. Meta will no longer charge a fee for limited EU targeted advertising, instead allowing users to “share less personal data for an experience with more limited personalised advertising,” according to the Commission. Meta will launch the new options January 2026. Meta was previously fined 200 million euros for alleged violations of the Digital Markets Act stemming from its original pay-or-consent model. Meanwhile, BBC News reports the social platform X barred the Commission from advertising on the platform after the 120 million euro fine to the company for alleged Digital Services Act violations.
